Probiotics, which means &#8220;for life&#8221;, have been used for centuries as natural components in health-promoting foods.</p>
<p>This beneficial bacterium is important in recolonizing the intestinal tract with good bacteria during and after antibiotic use as well as supporting overall health and wellness. Probiotics are not the same thing as prebiotics which are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth and/or activity of beneficial microorganisms already in the human colon.</p>
<p>Probiotics are live microorganisms (in most cases, bacteria) that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut. The use of good probiotics is important in healing many chronic gastrointestinal problems that are so often associated in those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and IBS. One study performed in a 4-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 60 individuals with IBS, probiotics treatment with lactobacilli showed markedly beneficial to slowing down the bowels and reversing IBS. <p><strong>Iron</strong> deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, with 20 to 50 percent of people affected. The average body contains only one teaspoon of iron, but this mineral is crucial in oxygen transportation throughout the bloodstream and into cells. A lack of iron will starve the body of oxygen and energy, which cause the symptoms of iron deficiency to be fatigue, foggy thinking, irritability, headaches, and lethargy. A lot of athletes have inadequate iron intake, impairing their exercise performance as it decreases hemoglobin levels and the amount of oxygen that is delivered to the muscles while it increases the time that is needed to recover from exercise. Iron is also important in immunity, with optimal iron intake strengthening the immune system and building resistance to colds, infections, and diseases. Even though inadequate intake is a common concern, too much can also cause health problems including stomach and intestinal cramps, nausea, and constipation.</p>
<p><span id="more-14"></span>The most important function of <strong>selenium</strong> is its antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme is invaluable in protecting red blood cells and cell membranes from free radical damage. Selenium works closely with vitamin E, sometimes replacing it in certain situations. Selenium holds an important role in maintaining the immune system and has been shown to reduce the risk of many health problems which include several types of cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain birth defects.</p>
<p><strong>Zinc</strong> is a valuable antioxidant that supports many aspects of the immune system. Zinc works in the eyes to protect them against sunlight-related free radicals. Zinc supplements have been found to slow the progression of macular degeneration, but high intakes of zinc and other antioxidants have been shown to lower the risk of developing this eye disease in the first place. This mineral can reduce the severity and duration of the common cold when in lozenge form, if started within 24 hours of the first cold symptom and taken every couple of hours. Taking 50mg of zinc daily or higher amounts for short periods of time is a good idea, but amounts over 150mg daily could cause metallic taste, stomach upset, or impair immune function. Many modern diets contain extremely low amounts of silicon, especially since food processing removes much of the silicon.</p>
<p><strong>Silicon</strong> improves the elasticity and suppleness to skin that has been damaged by excessive skin exposure. Silicon is also important in natural bone formation, since deficiencies in silicon lead to bone weakness and sluggish wound health. Bone mineral density can be improved in people with osteoporosis by raising the intake of silicon.</p>
<p><strong>Chromium</strong> is important in maintaining blood sugar levels, as well as many other roles in the body. Chromium deficiency impairs the blood sugar-insulin relationship, while chromium supplementation improves insulin response. Studies have shown that supplementing with chromium picolinate improves diabetes management by lowering blood sugar, insulin, cholesterol, or triglyceride levels and reducing the reliance on blood sugar medications. This mineral is also important in the metabolism of fat and carbohydrates.</p>
<p>Finally, <strong>Sulfur</strong> is needed in the joints to keep the connective tissues within them strong and stable. One source of sulfur, MSM, has been shown to significantly relieve pain and improve use of knee joints in studies. <p>1. Each morning set intentions for your day for health, <strong>food</strong>, fun, etc. An intention is a goal that you intend to achieve. It&#8217;s easy to feel out of control and out of alignment when you are away from your routine. When you set daily intentions you are focusing on what you really want and desire instead of being pulled by the current of the day.</p>
<p>2. Breathe! It sounds so simple but most of us are completely unaware of our breath. Practice tuning into your breath throughout your day. (Take a yoga class to learn more about breathing.)</p>
<p>3. While dining out take a moment before you open the menu to ask your body what it is truly hungry for. Most menus are written with the intention to sell you something not to nourish your body, mind and spirit. Your body has all of the answers and all you have to do is ask and listen. For example, most restaurants bring bread to the table. If you do not want bread tell the server, &#8220;no bread please&#8221;, before they bring it to your table that way you won&#8217;t eat it.</p>
<p><span id="more-11"></span>4. Chew each bite 20 times. One of the biggest issues with traveling is constipation so slow down, breathe and chew your food. Digestion begins in the mouth. Chewing food thoroughly gives the digestive system a break.</p>
<p>5. Eat early and take a walk after dinner. You will sleep better and the movement will help digestion.</p>
<p>6. Be flexible. Sometimes when we travel we feel stressed and up-tight because we are out of our normal routine which affects our digestion. Try to be flexible and adventurous and let go of your expectations, don&#8217;t beat yourself up if you ate desert or drank too much. Focus on the big picture and remember that tomorrow is a new beginning!</p>
<p>7. Drink tons of water! Try drinking at least 70 ounces of filtered water a day. Most of us are chronically dehydrated which causes fatigue, food cravings, stress, tension etc. So drink up!</p>
<p>8. Eat where the locals eat. Shop at Farmer&#8217;s Markets and eat simply. Your body will love you.</p>
<p>9. Relax and enjoy the new sights, sounds, smells and people.</p>
<p>10. Don&#8217;t be afraid to skip a meal. Often times when we travel we feel run down and over stimulated and find ourselves on a crazy roller coaster ride trying to catch up. We come home exhausted needing a vacation from our vacation. You can skip a meal and exercise, meditate, breathe or nap instead of eating. This will rejuvenate you!</p>

We hear the endless references to it when experts tell us what NOT to eat. We know it&#8217;s one of the leading causes of obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol.</p>
<p>So why exactly do we continue to eat fast food even when we know it&#8217;s terrible for us?</p>
<p>Here are a few quick tips for overcoming our fast food addiction:</p>
<p><strong>1. Fast Food is FAST Food</strong>. Well yeah, that&#8217;s kind of implied in the name right? The pace of life has never been faster, with most of us on the go with our jobs and our kids, and we feel like there just aren&#8217;t enough hours in the day to take the time to make a good home cooked meal. While it&#8217;s true that there isn&#8217;t enough time to make a huge, thanksgiving style, feast every day but not all home cooked meals force us to slave over a hot stove for hours. The key to having time to make dinner is planning. Make a schedule of meals for the week, go to the store and buy everything you need. When you have everything you need in front of you, meals don&#8217;t take nearly as long.</p>
<p><span id="more-8"></span><strong>2. Fast Food Is Cheaper.</strong> This is more of a lunchtime problem, but if you&#8217;re low on cash the fast food chains offer dozens of quick, cheap meals, but you pay for it with high cholesterol and loads of sugar. For example, the McDonalds dollar menu (in my area) offers a double cheeseburger, a McChicken sandwich (fried), Chicken McNuggets or two apple pies for $1 each. None of those items have less than 12 grams of fat! The perception here is that a decent meal costs way more to make, but does it really? Perhaps it is, but it isn&#8217;t cheaper by much. A turkey sandwich and a bag of low salt pretzels is a much smarter choice and can be had for less than $2.50 a day. The fast food dollar menu may be slightly cheaper but your health is worth more than an extra few cents isn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p><strong>3. It&#8217;s Hard To Eat Healthy.</strong> On The Road Whether traveling for work or for pleasure, we just don&#8217;t eat right on the road. People tend to eat at restaurants they recognize and the fast food chains that you see on every other street corner are often the first stop. On top of that, without a kitchen it&#8217;s hard to prepare a good meal. I&#8217;ll admit, this one is tough to overcome, but it&#8217;s not impossible. I always tend to eat poorly while I&#8217;m traveling, but I have found that packing healthier snacks like low salt pretzels, apple slices, oranges or granola bars keeps me from crashing the fast food windows as often, and I don&#8217;t feel like a ball of flub after I eat them. If you are traveling for more than a few days, inquire about the availability of a refrigerator in the hotel room and find a local grocery store. Personally, I am almost always disappointed with the quality and feel like I have a brick in my stomach when I&#8217;m finished eating it. If fast food tastes better than your home cooked meals, it&#8217;s time to get more adventurous with your food. Try some new recipes or add new spices to your meals, and try not to make the same thing too often. Being repetitive with your meals will become boring fast and force you right back in to the rut of eating bad food.</p>
